SMART RIVERS `21

13. – 16. September 2011 New Orleans

SMART RIVERS '21 is the result of the efforts of major international organizations and companies in Europe and the USA to ensure and expand the rightful place of inland water transportation in the overall volume of traffic.

The signers of the initial agreement were the European Federation of Inland Ports (EFIP) and TINA VIENNA with the support of via donau on the European side and the Ohio River Authority and the Port of Pittsburgh Commission on the US side. Meanwhile, PIANC USA has assumed a leadership role in Smart Rivers in the USA, which led to PIANC Austria and in turn PIANC International supporting Smart Rivers. The US Army Corps of Engineers has also become an important supporter of the Smart Rivers Initiative.

Thus far there have been four conferences in Pittsburgh, Brussels, Louisville and Vienna and New Orleans will host the fifth on September 13 - 16, 2009. After the highly successful 2009 – Conference in the City Hall of Vienna, the 2011 New Orleans SMART RIVERS '21 Conference will represent yet another milestone in the development of inland waterway transportation.
